SkillUp Africa Community
Your information
What we collect, why we collect it, who can see it, and what you can ask us to do about it. Written to describe what this platform actually does.
Who holds your information
Your information is held by Euidem Foundation, at C-Villa Resorts, Lekki Scheme II, Ogombo Road, Abraham Adesanya, Ajah, Lagos State, Nigeria. Questions about your information go to privacy@skillup.africa.
What we collect, and why
Only what a part of the platform actually needs to work.
- To create your membership
- Your name, email address, phone number, date of birth and where you are (country, region, city). The date of birth decides which parts of the platform are appropriate for you; it is stored encrypted and is never shown to other members. Your phone number is kept so a programme coordinator can reach you. It is not verified by text message at the moment, and it is not needed to complete your membership.
- To sign you in and keep the account yours
- Your password, stored as a hash we cannot reverse. The times and devices your account was used from, so you can see and end your own sessions. Failed attempts, so we can slow down somebody guessing.
- To run your learning
- Which courses you enrol in, how far through each lesson you are, your quiz attempts and answers, the work you submit, the feedback a trainer gives you, and any certificate issued to you. Private lesson notes and bookmarks are yours: they are not shown to trainers, administrators or anyone else.
- To let you take part in Community
- The spaces you join, what you post, your replies, and the acknowledgements you give. Other members see the name you chose to be known by and what you wrote. They do not see your email address, your phone number or your date of birth.
- To keep people safe
- Reports members make about content, with a copy of what was reported as it was at the time, and the decisions moderators take. If you report something, the person you reported is never told who reported it.
- For a young person on an approved programme
- Where someone aged 16 or 17 takes part through an approved programme, we hold their guardian's name and contact details and the record of consent. That information is encrypted and is not visible to other members or to ordinary staff.
What we do not do
- We do not sell your information, and we do not share it for advertising.
- We do not make your profile public. Your profile is visible to you only.
- We do not show your email address or phone number to other members.
- We do not read your private lesson notes into any staff, trainer or employer view.
- There is no direct messaging between members, so there are no private messages to hold.
Who inside SkillUp Africa can see what
Access follows the job, not the seniority. A trainer sees the course progress of the learners they teach and the work those learners submitted — not their contact details, their date of birth, their private notes or anything outside that course. Staff running the Academy see the catalogue they administer. A moderator sees reported content and the decisions taken about it. A safeguarding concern goes to designated safeguarding leads and is deliberately closed to ordinary moderators.
Email and text messages
We send email to confirm your address, to help you reset a password, and to tell you about things that happened in your account. Those messages are sent through Resend, our email provider, which processes the address and the message on our behalf. We do not send marketing email you did not ask for. We do not send text messages at the moment.
Where your information lives
The platform and its database run on managed hosting. Course video is hosted on Vimeo and YouTube: when you play a lesson video, that provider receives the request from your browser, and we use their privacy-preserving embeds so they set no advertising cookie for it. Files you upload — course work, a profile photo — are stored privately by us and released only to someone entitled to see them.
How long we keep things
We keep your account and your learning record for as long as you are a member, because your progress and any certificate you earned depend on it. When you ask us to delete your account we remove your personal information; where a record has to survive for the integrity of something else — a moderation decision, an issued certificate — we keep that record without you attached to it. Exact retention periods form part of the policy still to be confirmed with our adviser.
What you can ask for
- A copy of the information we hold about you.
- A correction, where something is wrong. Most of it you can change yourself in Settings.
- Deletion of your account and the personal information in it.
- Withdrawal of a consent you gave, including a guardian's consent for a young person.
- An end to non-essential messages, in your notification settings.
Ask by writing to privacy@skillup.africa. If you are not satisfied with how we answer, you can complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC).
